The Songs of Summer #27: ‘Here Comes the Summer’ by The Undertones

undertones-here-comes-the-summerIt’s time for a blast of power-pop, new wave summer music to get us through another Monday. Summer, fall, winter…it doesn’t matter. Mondays will always be Mondays.

Here Comes the Summer‘ might be the shortest song on my Songs of Summer (nope. There’s one shorter. Wait for it.) list but it packs a wallop. It’s a simple song, like a good summer song should be. The lyrics consist of:

“Oh baby, baby what can I do?
You know you drive me crazy when I’m looking at you
The summer’s really here and it’s time to come out
Time to discover what fun is about

Here comes the summer
Here comes the summer
Here comes the summer

Keep on looking for the girls with their faces all tanned
Lying on the beaches all covered in sand
Stretching out their long legs lying in the sun
They know they’re beautiful, having fun..”

…all wrapped up in a quick little bundle of energy with a hook so big you’ll be singing it to yourself in your head for days.

What’s most remarkable about this song is the group performing it. The Undertones were an early punk/new wave band from Northern Ireland. Unlike the bleak landscape of their homeland, and the terrible political violence occurring there at this time (The Troubles), The Undertones said “f**k this” and wrote songs about girls, teenage love/angst/heartbreak, having fun, even Mars bars. The kind of stuff young people worry about everywhere in the world, no matter what the political climate at home may be. Let the adults worry about that stuff.

Here Comes the Summer‘, like many of The Undertone’s songs, was inspired by their love of The Ramones. As inspiration goes, young bands can never go wrong with The Ramones. It’s a scientific fact. The song was released in July 1979, and reached #34 on the UK singles chart, proving once again that the Brits have infinitely better musical taste than us Yanks.

Summer is a state of mind, and it is Universal. Here’s your proof:
