The Songs of Summer #47: ‘On the Island’ by Brian Wilson (w/She & Him)
When compiling lists of summer songs, one should never stray too far from Brian Wilson…it’s just common sense. ‘On the Island‘ is a track from his 2015 album No Pier Pressure, and it’s a breezy, easy-going little number featuring M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel, better known as She & Him. This song is about as close as you’re going to get on this list to a Jimmy Buffet song from a lyrical point of view. A song about a couple getting away to a tropical island. That’s it. No deep meanings here whatsoever.
No Pier Pressure was originally intended to be a full-fledged Beach Boys album, a follow-up to their really excellent 2012 album ‘That’s Why God Made the Radio until Mike Love pulled his typical b.s. and broke up the band yet again. DO NOT get me started on Mike Love. I’m warning you.
So instead of a Beach Boys album, Brian went into the studio with a collection of other artists (as well as fellow Boys Al Jardine and David Marks). She & Him have always been big Brian and Beach Boys fans, so it was a perfect fit (as well as a dream wish fulfillment) to have them go into the studio to record ‘On the Island‘ with Brian. Zooey Deschanel’s dreamy voice pairs quite nicely with Brian’s. Add in some tasty guitar licks and some delicious whistling, and you’ve got yourself a nice little summer tune.
I don’t know where this island is that they’re singing about, but I do know that I want to get there as soon as I find out. It sounds like my kind of place. What about you? Let’s go.
