The Songs of Summer #65: Sweet Soul Two-Fer
Yet again, I’m going with songs that have nothing to do with summer; but to me, there’s something about soul music that just feels good to hear in the summertime. Do you know what I mean? Or is it just me? I don’t think it is.
To show you what I’m talking about, I’d like to submit the following two songs as my Exhibits A and B to support my argument.
First up, ‘Black Pearl‘ by Sonny Charles & The Checkmates. It’s a 1969 Phil Spector produced (and co-written) tune that’s so beautiful, with such a sweet sound, I never get tired of hearing it. Why this song wasn’t a super smash #1 hit is totally beyond me.
The other song I’ve chosen for today is a better-known hit, but still not a mega-smash. ‘I’m Your Puppet‘ by James & Bobby Purify was a #6 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1966. It’s another easy-movin’ R&B track from what I’ll say right here and now was the greatest decade in the history of recorded music, the 1960’s.
After a hot, oppressive summer day, these two sweet soul shots will definitely help cool things down, in the best way possible. Two fabulous songs, conveniently packaged together in one blog post that goes down smooth.
