The Songs of Summer #93: ‘World Upside Down’ by Jimmy Cliff

jimmy-cliff-world-upside-downI hadn’t planned on putting this song on the Songs of Summer playlist, but I got to thinking about it yesterday and today, looking for something that would be a good, appropriate song for today. Again, it’s not really a day where I feel like celebrating summer music…The weather’s kind of cool and cloudy, which isn’t helping things, and the news coming out of the world really sometimes makes me want to crawl back into bed and pull the covers up over my head and wish all the world’s troubles away.

But that never really works, does it? The world is upside down, but it’s really always been kind of a fucked up place if you stop and think about it. Things are always unfair and unjust; this is nothing new. There has always been pure evil in the world, that’s nothing new either. I think what’s new, and what makes it all seem so overwhelming, is the instant access to all of the bad news and horrific images. It’s now to the point where we can watch murders take place live right before our eyes, even for those who didn’t really wish to see it. It’s all too much for me sometimes. I feel down today, I feel discouraged and depressed, and I feel enraged all at the same time. It makes picking out a fun summertime song a bit of a chore.

But you know what? Despite everything we see in the news, sometimes literally everything we see, there is so much more that is positive and uplifting. But positive and uplifting doesn’t pull in the ratings and ad dollars like horror and fear. We’re being blasted almost minute to minute these days with one bad thing after another. But we’ve got enough to worry about in our own personal lives, don’t we? And we definitely have enough to be thankful for in our own personal lives. I think it’s in all of our best interests to occasionally take a break from the instant notifications and the social media, and put away the phones and tablets and experience the real world that’s right in front of our eyes. The big bad world isn’t going to go anywhere, I’m afraid, so it doesn’t do any of us any good to have instant, constant access to the never-ending stream of insanity and cruelness.

As I mentioned yesterday, music is a powerful force (maybe the most powerful force) for lifting moods and spirits. For some, it may be a bible hymn; for others it may be a sad-ass country song or a snarling blast of punk rock. For me, for today, I’m seeking shelter in the words and music of reggae legend Jimmy Cliff. In ‘World Upside Down,’ Cliff calls out all of the trouble and strife in this world, but reminds us powerfully that the antidote to all of it is inside all of us, in our hearts. It’s still summer, and the world’s still spinning. Let every day be a new day, let every day be a rebirth.

“They say the world is spinning around
I say the world is upside down
They say the world is spinning around

I say the world is upside down
Oh yeah, all right

Looking at the world today
I am implored to say
So much war and poverty
While few enjoy prosperity

They say the world is spinning around
I say the world is upside down
They say the world is spinning around
I say the world is upside down
Oh yeah, all right

Looking at the world I agree
Oh what fools we mortals be
Morality is in demise
Immorality is on the rise

They say the world is spinning around
I say the world is upside down
They say the world is spinning around
I say the world is upside down

Oh yeah, too much injustice
How can there be peace?
Religious hypocrisy
Political tyranny
You see it my
What about the children now?

They say the world is spinning around
I say the world is upside down
They say the world is spinning around
I say the world is upside down
They say the world is spinning around
I say the world is upside down
They say the world is s?inning around
I say the world is upside down
Oh yeah,
Crime and violence
Poverty and starvation
Ecological calamity
Economic instability
What’s wrong with humanity?
Have they lost their sanity?
For the love of vanity
What about the love, love now?
You know that we need it
What about the love, love, love…”
