Well, well, well…Every year, the first significant snowfall of the year is bearing down on us here in Michigan, and with it the non-stop warnings to be prepared for the end of the world. We’re predicted to get a few inches of snow, which means in reality we might see two, but that’s not stopping the media from issuing one WINTER STORM WATCH warning after another. Every year, it’s headline news. And every year, it drives me kind of crazy.
What’s the deal with our obsession with zombies? It’s not anything new, as this tune will attest. ‘Zombie Jamboree’ is a zombie-themed calypso tune from 1956. That’s really all I know about it. It’s all I, or you, need to know about it.
I’ve had some kind of sinus thing going on this week; stuffed up head, dull throbbing headache, plugged sore ears…and I need to do something about it. And I think this song right here might just do the trick. I’m talking about the 1958 blast of rockabilly insanity known as “Love Me” by the mysterious masked rocked known to the world only as THE PHANTOM.
I can’t possibly let this Songs of Summer List go incomplete without at least one classic exotica track; I figure if I’m only going to include one, I might as well use the song that gave its name to an entire movement of kitschy music.
‘Sleep Walk‘ is the sound of a warm tropical breeze on a moonlit beach. The sound of the 1950’s giving way to the shiny new 1960’s.
