I almost forgot! I almost forgot to post the Friday Song. It’s been a hectic day; I took a long (very long) lunch break and snuck off to catch Star Wars The Force Awakens. Suffice it to say it was time very well spent. It’s good. It’s really good. I hope you get a chance to see it before the spoilers catch up with you; they are out there. It’s best seen without knowing anymore than you know right now.
I’ve reached that point in the Christmas season where all the music everywhere is starting to get to me a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I love the classics…but still. Do they really need to be playing everywhere? I don’t need to be serenaded at the gas station. The grocery store is bad enough. And I’ve also noticed, in addition to it being everywhere, the music choosers everywhere seem to be choosing versions of songs butchered by new artists rather than the much more soothing (to me) classic original versions. If I have to hear ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,’ it’d better be Brenda Lee singing. And if it’s not John Lennon singing ‘Happy Xmas,’ I don’t really need to hear it. No one does.
There has been an awakening. Can you feel it?
Well, well, well…Every year, the first significant snowfall of the year is bearing down on us here in Michigan, and with it the non-stop warnings to be prepared for the end of the world. We’re predicted to get a few inches of snow, which means in reality we might see two, but that’s not stopping the media from issuing one WINTER STORM WATCH warning after another. Every year, it’s headline news. And every year, it drives me kind of crazy.
I don’t even know what to say about this, other than it may be the greatest thing I’ve come across on the strange and wonderful internet in a long, long time.
Here we are at the penultimate Songs of Summer song of the day; I started this way back in June (or maybe even May? I can’t even remember.) as a way to share out some of my personal favorite summertime songs, as well as an exercise in getting me in the habit of a daily posting. I’ll say it has got me posting stuff daily, and that’s a goody thing. And it has been a lot of fun picking a song every day to match my summer mood. It would’ve been nice to have gotten some feedback into others’ favorite songs, but I’m afraid my daily readers are nowhere near enough to generate that kind of a discussion. For now, at least, this blog’s still a one-way street. We’ll see what happens down the road, but at least if I’m posting stuff here that means I’m at the very least tickling some of my own brain cells.
‘Walkabout‘ got a lot of play on my iPod circa summer of ’09. This chillwave song by indie stalwart Atlas Sound with help from Noah Lennox (aka Panda Bear) has a great summer vibe to it, and music that sounded instantly familiar to me when I first heard it… I recognized it as a sample of another of my favorite summer songs, this one from a much earlier era, ‘What Am I Going to Do’ by The Dovers. This garage rock classic from 1965 is one of my favorite cuts on the essential Rhino Records box set ‘Nuggets,’ which compiled several CDs worth of the greatest garage rock songs of the sixties. ‘Walkabout‘ samples The Dovers very heavily, and in this case the end result sounds amazing. Since I love both songs, I figured why not just include both of them. Why not, right? The Songs of Summer is coming to an end, so why not pack as much in these last few days as possible. Neither song is really a summer song, but they’re both songs that I totally associate with the summertime, and that’s good enough for me.
